What is the connection between peace and poverty?

By Devin Hibbard, CEO: Street Business School & BeadforLife

Why has Street Business School – a program focused on helping women in Africa increase their income – become a semifinalist in the Billion Acts Hero Awards sponsored by @PeaceJam Foundation? It is because the link between economic scarcity and injustice or violence is high. At @BeadforLife, we believe that we can achieve peace by fighting poverty.

Street Business School helps women transform their lives and lift their families out of poverty, fostering human dignity and pride. We are committed to fighting poverty as a root cause of injustice, insecurity, and violence worldwide. We have been empowering women for more than a decade, and touched the lives of over 40,000 people in Uganda. Street Business School is now scaling globally through a training model which equips the experts – those groups working at the grassroots of the communities of which they are a part – with a proven model for effectively increasing the income of women and families.

Here is the impact Street Business School has:

-89% of graduates have businesses two years later

-211% average increase in income, meaning women go from earning $1.35/day on average, to $4.19 a day.

-15X (1,462%) average increase for women who joined earning less than $.65/day
